Student Opportunities

Hands-On Learning Beyond the Classroom

For students looking to go beyond textbooks and theory, the Gainesville Hackerspace provides an affordable and welcoming environment for hands-on exploration. With a reduced student rate of $35/month, members gain 24/7 access to an extensive range of equipment—including laser cutters, 3D printers, sewing machines, welders, CNC routers, electronics benches, and more. Unlike many campus or institutional makerspaces, which often have limited hours, tool restrictions, or program-based access, our space emphasizes personal responsibility and trust — giving members the ability to work independently once properly trained.

Affordable, Flexible, and Community-Driven

More than just a tool library, the Hackerspace is a collaborative community of experienced makers, engineers, artists, and hobbyists who are eager to mentor and support newcomers. Students are encouraged to ask questions, seek help, and engage directly with others working across a wide range of disciplines. Whether you’re prototyping a robot, fixing an instrument, learning to use a mill, or experimenting with materials for a design project, you’ll find others who are excited to share what they know and help you grow your skills.

A Place for Creative Exploration and Skill-Building

This supportive atmosphere makes the Hackerspace an ideal environment for student creators working across a variety of interests, including cosplay, LARP, textile arts, and costume design. While Tuesday night open houses welcome all areas of making — from electronics to woodworking to sewing — our Thursday night sewing meetups provide a more focused space for those interested in fabric-based projects and hands-on craft. Whether you’re constructing a prop, learning to use a sewing machine, or developing a costume from scratch, the Hackerspace offers practical access to tools, space, and a welcoming community.
